I’m just writing to you today to reconfirm the council’s support to the community after the sentencing of the three men for planning a heinous attack on the Jewish community in the north west.
All three men have today received long jail sentences (37, 26 and 6 years respectively) for their roles in what could have been a terrible attack if it had not been foiled by the crucial action taken by the police.
The sentencing reflects the seriousness in which the authorities take antisemitism and that it is not tolerated in our borough and region.
The details of the plot were distressing particularly as the court case followed the awful attacks on the Heaton Park Synagogue and Hanukkah celebrations in Sydney.
We share the horror and sadness felt by our communities on these attacks on Jewish families and the impact of these appalling incidents on all those affected.
As I have written before, please know that our Jewish community is an integral part of life in Bury and there is no place for antisemitism or terror in our borough.
The council, the police and our partners have a clear and unequivocal zero tolerance of antisemitism and all forms of hatred. I would like to thank the courts and the police for their quick actions in stopping this horrible plot.
