Rabbi Mitchell Goodman, Director of Jewish Education Manchester continues Term 3 of his new course on "The Spirituality of Prayer" on Wednesdays at 8.15pm in Shul. He is focussing initially on the Amida prayer.
Rabbi Goodman says: The prayer of the Shemoneh Esrei/Amidah is Judaism's most formal prayer. Composed by the Anshi Kneses HaGedolah (Men of the Great Assembly) in the early years of Bayis Sheni it's been recited at least three times a day since then.
This prayer is both the foundation and center-point of all services. There are several challenges of reciting this prayer with devotion and preventing it from becoming a stayed, by-rote experience.
This series is designed to give a greater understanding as to why it's formulated the way it is, what it means, how to focus on its messages and how to interpret its themes in terms of our daily lives and individual needs. When one has a deeper appreciation of these ideas it will make this tefillah come to life every day.
Rabbi Goodman, of Jewish Education in Manchester (JEM) will cover a variety of concepts and laws associated with the history and development of the prayer in general and deep insights into the formulation of the themes and meanings in each of its structure.
We very much hope you gain from this series and develop your own appreciation of this most important, and frequent, prayer.
Refreshments available from 8.00pm.
The total cost of the six-week term is £30.
